WINTER DRIVING TIPS

DRIVING IN WET WEATHER

  • Tyres - maintain good thread depth, correctly inflated offer much more grip than worn tyres.
  • Keep well back from the car in front, at least twice the normal stopping distance.
  • Don't drive through a flooded area, turn around or you risk the vehicle stalling.

DRIVING ON ICY ROADS

  • Decrease speed and leave yourself plenty of room to stop. Allow at least 3 times normal stopping distance.
  • Brake gently to avoid brakes lock up. Ease off if you lock up and re-apply power gently.
  • Turn on lights.
  • Do not use cruise control on icy roads.

DRIVING IN SNOW

  • Driving on snow - drive slowly increase stopping distance by 3 or 4 times normal distance.
  • When travelling on snow stay in a high gear and when going down hill stay in a low gear.
  • Keep braking and acceleration smooth, no sudden movements.

DRIVING IN FOG

  • When driving in fog reduce your speed ensure you have fog lights on both front and rear!
  • Leave 2/3 times normal stopping distance from the car in front.

DRIVING IN HIGH WINDS

  • On country roads be very aware of fallen branches and other debris.
  • Be aware of other vehicles in particular, buses and lorries as bigger vehicles are more affected by winds especially when passing a truck as this can cause your vehicle to swerve.
  • Big winds are often accompanied by rain, stay alert for slippy areas.

DRIVING IN THE DARK

  • It is 3 times more dangerous driving in the dark. The main reason is that the darkness really reduces your vision and affects your reactions.
  • Keep lights clean get into the habit of wiping your lights before driving at night - it makes a massive difference.
  • Slow down before bends
  • Twilight put lights on it allows other vehicles to see you.

PEDESTRIANS & CYCLISTS

  • Always wear bright or reflective clothing to make you easily visible to other road users.

COUNTRY ROADS

  • Country roads are different. Bends are much sharper than they appear.
  • Be aware of sudden grip change from mud on the roads
  • Be aware that slow moving traffic like tractors could be just around the corner.
